Background
In 1990-1991, Attapong Pradidsarn Mellenthin, known to his friends
as Att, served as the Treasurer of MAASU during its inaugural
year and was integral in implementing and constructing the Fall
Leadership Retreat and Spring Conference format for the organization.
He then served as the Director of MAASU guiding the organization's
transition and growth. Without his energy and dedication to MAASU,
the organization in its early years would not have thrived as
it did.
Att earned his Bachelor's degree in Business from Wright State
University in Dayton, OH in 1992. During this time, he also served
as president of the Asian American Student Association at Wright
State University. After graduation, for the past seven years,
Att was employed as a computer systems analyst and project leader
at NCR.
Att was stationed at Wright Patterson military base in Dayton,
OH for more than 12 years. First, he served in the 906th division
then later in the 445th division. An honor graduate of the Air
Force Fire Academy, he excelled as a firefighter, supervisor and
most recently as the 445th division's Safety Officer serving as
Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force Reserves.
Our good friend, devoted son, Air Force Reserve firefighter,
and Asian Pacific American leader, Attapong Mellenthin passed
away peacefully from heart failure as a result of liver cancer
on February 26, 2001. He is survived by his mother Benjamars,
father Stephen, and younger brother Colin, and numerous relatives
in the US and Thailand. Everyone he touched will miss him.
In celebration of his life, Att's family and friends have generously
donated funds to establish an endowment fund for the MAASU/CAPAL
Attapong P. Mellenthin Memorial Scholarship. Att's long list of
accomplishments displays the breadth and depth with which he lived
his life to help others. He constantly cultivated and mentored
many individuals to develop the same passion for serving the community.
For the love of family, country and friends, Att gave all he
could and more. The scholarship memorializes for all time the
wonderful loving memory of Att's life.
