The Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership (CAPAL), a national non-profit organization consisting of a 20-member Board of Directors, Advisory Council, and two full-time staff, announces an unpaid Public Interest Legal Counsel position for the 2016-17 calendar years. CAPAL is dedicated to building leadership and public policy knowledge within the Asian American Pacific Islander community. Its mission is to promote AAPI interests and success in public service careers, to provide information and education on policy issues affecting the AAPI community, and to serve the AAPI community at large. The CAPAL Public Interest Legal Counsel will work under the Board of Directors, reporting directly to the Board Chair, to perform the following tasks:
1) Ensure that CAPAL is operating in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws.
2) Review legal and contractual agreements.
3) Perform official filings, including filings to maintain 501(c)(3) status, in coordination with the Treasurer.
4) Advise the Board of Directors on other legal issues, as applicable.
This is an unpaid position. Candidates based in the Washington D.C. area are preferred, but strong candidates who can work remotely will be considered. The estimated time commitment is approximately five hours a month, and is largely calculated on an adhoc basis. Attendance at monthly board meetings is voluntary.
J.D. required. Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to public service, including service to the Asian Pacific American community, are strongly preferred. Experience with non-profit organizations is also preferred. Additionally, candidates must serve a one year term.
