FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
MAY 3, 2013

CAPAL Ball to Celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month on May 9

WASHINGTON, DC – On Thursday, May 9, the Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership (CAPAL) will host its second annual Asian Pacific American Heritage Ball at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. The Ball will feature prominent leaders and advocates of the Asian Pacific American (APA) community, along with young professionals who are dedicated to public service. Attendees will have the opportunity to network with peers and community leaders to commemorate the role of APAs in our nation’s capital.

The event will feature celebrity Master of Ceremonies Brian Yang of Hawaii Five-O; Mayor of Campbell, California Evan Low; and Doua Thor, executive director of the Southeast Asia Resource Action Center. The featured individuals were chosen by the organization because of their ongoing commitment to serving the APA community.

“We’re at a historic moment when Asian Pacific Americans are the fastest growing minority group in America,” says CAPAL Chair Rebecca Lee. “And CAPAL’s honored to host this annual event where we can celebrate the role and achievements of APAs and inspire greater civic engagement.”

The event has garnered far-reaching support among community leaders, such as host committee members Norman Mineta, former Secretary of Commerce; Elaine Chao, former Secretary of Labor; and Mazie Hirono, the first APA woman elected to the Senate. The proceeds from the Ball will benefit CAPAL’s internship, scholarship, and career development programs for young APA professionals and students.

Tickets to the Ball are available to the public at www.capal.org/ball until Wednesday, May 8, 11:55pm EDT.

The Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership (CAPAL) is a 501(c)(3) charitable and educational organization dedicated to building leadership and public policy knowledge within the Asian Pacific American community. Its mission is to promote APA interests and success in public service careers, to provide information and education on policy issues affecting the community, and to serve the APA community at large.
CAPAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

CAPAL will award scholarships to outstanding APA college undergraduate and graduate students who will be serving in unpaid public service internships (non-profit or government) in the Washington DC area for the summer. The scholarships are intended to enable outstanding APA scholars with leadership potential to work full-time and learn about ways to influence public policy in their local communities. Recipients of the CAPAL scholarships are responsible for securing their own public service internships.

CAPAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

CAPAL will help place students in internships within the federal government in DC. Opportunities in regional offices, including California and Texas, may be possible. Interns are placed in program management, legal and finance positions. These internship positions are open to ALL MAJORS, and are suited for individuals looking to gain real-world federal government experience. CAPAL has partnerships with Federal Agencies including Agricultural Research Services and Forest Service.

Each CAPAL intern will be awarded a $3,000 stipend to support the successful completion of their internship plus $500 for travel reimbursement. Depending on your interests and placement, your duties could vary from policy or scientific research, project coordination and management, business, law, communication, and more. Applicants are asked to specify their preferences on the application, and those selected will be placed based on their interests and skills. Agricultural knowledge is not required. These internships are suitable for all students interested in government and public policy.

CAPAL will also mentor all selected interns and provide guidance in transitioning to Washington, D.C. including how to locate housing, how to navigate the city, and how to make the best of their summer in the nation’s capital.

CAPAL brings together a diverse group of energetic and talented young professionals who otherwise might never have had the opportunity to work together. It’s a special experience being part of a board that’s far more than the sum of its parts and pushes forward the cause of APA leadership further than any of us could individually. As a newcomer to Washington, I couldn’t have found a better way to dive into APA efforts and forge a sense of genuine community.

CAPAL gave me a great opportunity to shine. Not only was I able to utilize my work skills to promote the mission, but I was able to incorporate my own ideas to surpass a goal that I had only imagined in the beginning of the year.

What is great about being on the Board is that I can be part of the APA community outside of my day job and work towards a great mission. This year it has not only allowed me to develop long lasting friendships and learn more about the importance of leadership in the APA community, but has also given me the opportunity to manage projects and work with a variety of people. There is no doubt that what I learn in my time on CAPAL’s Board will be an asset to me in the future.
