The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is the public health agency in the U.S. Department of Agriculture responsible for ensuring that the nation’s commercial supply of meat, poultry, and egg products is safe, wholesome, and correctly labeled and packaged.
FSIS’ mission is embodied in the agency’s dedication to the latest science and public health protection, as well as the mandates established by law.
FSIS offers diverse opportunities in four major categories:
Food / Consumer Safety Inspection Inspectors comprise the largest category of employees in the agency, with over 7,500 nationwide. Food Inspectors protect public health through food safety and food defense. Many career paths are possible.
Administrative & Professional Positions FSIS offers a wide-range of administrative and professional positions including data analysts, information technology specialists, public and legislative affairs specialists, human resources specialists, risk managers, financial managers and analysts, and technical and clerical personnel.
Scientific Positions FSIS scientists protect the public by providing microbiological, pathological, chemical and other scientific analyses of meat, poultry, and egg products.
Veterinary Opportunities FSIS Public Health Veterinarians (Veterinary Medical Officers) help oversee the effectiveness of farm-to-table food safety systems. FSIS is the largest employer of veterinarians in the United States.
