CAPAL Intern Spotlight Guangshun Chen ’22

What are your main responsibilities at your position? What are some of your big projects? (this can include projects at your internship, your specific CAP project, etc)

My main responsibilities at the USDA – APHIS is to actively work with the team to produce effective measures against the current avian flu epidemic that is currently rampant across the United States. This can include anything generating a more efficient system to manage protective materials that can reduce operating times from a month to half an hour to simply understanding more about the disease and how we can effectively respond to this crisis.

How does this internship fit with your professional and career goals?

My main goal for this internship is to be able to have a better understanding of the public sector. This internship was a perfect introduction for me and has definitely made me much more interested in this career field in the future!

What do you hope to achieve this summer as a part of CAPAL’s 2022 cohort?

I wanted to be able to make long-lasting connections with extremely talented individuals and be able to learn from them.

What does public service mean to you? What sparked your interest or desire to get involved with public service?

To me, public service is giving to those who’ve helped me tremendously throughout my life. As an FGLI student and an immigrant- education was seen as more a myth than a reality for me. It is those teachers and tutors who were willing to spend additional time with me, that have allowed me to achieve the successes. I owe them a debt that can never be repaid and I think it would be my duty to assist those who were like me, and also make their dreams a reality.
