SUMMARY:2019 AANHPI Roundtable Series: CIA
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nSpeaker\nThis session will feature a guest speaker selected from the Office of Facilities and Mission Delivery at the CIA. They will share unique insight on their career experience with the agency from an Asian American\, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) perspective. \n  \nModerator\nJavan Santos is set to graduate this fall at the University of Guam. Born and raised in his native island of Guam\, he works to advocate for his community in the national level at any opportunity he can. After his first opportunity in DC two years ago as a CAPAL summer intern\, he had returned last fall to advocate for the AANHPI community and issues of Guam through participating in Asian Americans Advancing Justice’s Youth Leadership Summit. He is currently in the cohort of Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) summer congressional interns\, where he is placed at the office of Congresswoman Aumua Amata of American Samoa. Here\, he works to have the voice of the territories heard in order to be included in important federal policies. Back home\, he works as a Policy Analyst under Senator Clynt Ridgell of the 35th Guam Legislature\, where he works to assist in drafting policies to create a more sustainable and prosperous island for people across all different communities. \n  \n  \n  \nSupport for this Roundtable session is sponsored by the US Central Intelligence Agency\nRegister\nAll seats have been taken for this event. DESCRIPTION:Speaker\nJane Park is a U.S. Foreign Service Officer currently serving in the Office of Maritime Southeast Asia at the State Department’s Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs (EAP). Previously to her current position\, Jane served as an EAP Front Office Staff Assistant\, a Political Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Berlin\, Germany\, and a Consular Officer at the U.S. Consulate General in Monterrey\, Mexico. Her other past experience includes a fellowship with General Electric and internships with the Social Security Administration and local community service centers. Jane hails from Northern Virginia and earned her BSFS from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and MPA from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. \n  \n  \n  \nModerator\n Ashley Tjhung is the Operations Coordinator at the Funders Committee for Civic Participation — an innovative and thought-provoking network that shares an underlying conviction that all people deserve a voice in our democratic process. She is a recent graduate of the University of Michigan where she studied Public Policy and Intergroup Relations. While on campus\, Ashley served as Managing Editor of Michigan in Color\, the section of The Michigan Daily by and for students of color\, where her work on racial justice earned her the University of Michigan’s Martin Luther King Jr. Spirit Award. A passionate supporter of AANHPI causes\, Ashley was a CAPAL Scholar in 2018. SUMMARY:2019 AANHPI Roundtable Series: Mini Timmaraju
DESCRIPTION:Speaker\nMini Timmaraju has over 20 years of professional experience leading federal\, state and local campaigns\, as well as advocacy efforts for non-profit organizations. She has an extensive background on gender issues and community outreach strategies. She currently serves as an Executive Director on the Diversity and Inclusion team for Comcast NBCUniversal\, based out of their corporate headquarters in Philadelphia. She was previously on the External Affairs team where she served as a liaison between Comcast and external stakeholders including advocacy organizations\, political organizations\, and public policy groups.\nPrior to joining Comcast\, she served as Hillary for America’s National Women’s Vote Director\, leading the historic campaign’s planning and implementation of its strategy to maximize women’s participation in the election. This involved engaging with a variety of stakeholders—Members of Congress\, donors\, advocacy groups\, volunteers\, and the media— to mobilize grassroots support. \nPreviously\, Mini was the National Director of the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans\, where she managed legislative\, advocacy and communications strategy for a coalition of 34 Asian Pacific American organizations. Mini has also served as the Chief of Staff to Congressman Ami Bera M.D. (D\, CA-7)). Her other professional experience includes various roles with Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA)\, including Director of PPFA’s Office of the President. \nDuring her early career\, Mini held a number of leadership positions in state and local political organizations in South Carolina\, Oklahoma\, Tennessee\, New Hampshire\, Texas and New Delhi\, India. \nMini received her bachelor’s degree from the University of California-Berkeley and completed her J.D. at the University of Houston Law Center where she was the recipient of the Joan Garfinkle Glantz award for outstanding work in the field of civil rights and the Class of 1999 Distinguished Service Award. She resides in Philadelphia with her husband and two children. \n  \nModerator\nFarjana Islam has extensive experience in research\, community engagement and outreach\, partnership development\, network weaving\, coalition building\, and workshop facilitation. She is pursuing a career involving the intersection of public health and the environment\, rooted in JEDI (justice\, equity\, diversity and inclusion). She is currently a Certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides and Programs to encourage others to connect to themselves\, each other\, and the more than human world. She is also a participant in the Frontlines to Power program\, which empowers youth from frontline communities and communities of color to advocate for climate justice. \nPreviously\, Farjana was a fellow with the U.S. Forest Service through the Greening Youth Foundation and Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership program\, where she spearheaded an initiative to connect patients and communities to their public lands through education about health-in-nature benefits and forest health and human health connections\, as well as encourage citizen science awareness\, youth engagement\, and community environmental stewardship. Prior to her work at the U.S. Forest Service\, Farjana led weekly healthy and fun environmental sessions at the National Park Service. Her other professional experience includes research\, direct services\, and health workshop facilitation with research\, community\, and nonprofit organizations.
