SUMMARY:*EVENT POSTPONED* 2020 Washington Leadership Program Session II: Democracy 2020: Making It Work
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]This session will discuss the critical importance of civic engagement to the AANHPI community\, the challenges and barriers to greater civic engagement\, and the different ways that members of our community can become involved in our democracy. Key topics of discussion are the power of voting and the importance of the 2020 census\, as well as other avenues of civic engagement including a career in public service. \nSpeakers\nTina Wei Smith was appointed as the eighth Executive Director of the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (WHIAAPI) on December 9\, 2019. In this capacity\, Ms. Smith is responsible for directing the efforts of the Initiative and of the Presidential Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs)\, including overseeing an Interagency Working Group. She is also responsible for advising federal agency leadership on the implementation and coordination of federal programs as they relate to AAPIs across the federal government. The Initiative\, which is co-chaired by Secretary of Commerce Wilbur L. Ross and Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao\, works to broaden Asian American and Pacific Islander access to economic resources and opportunities and thus empower AAPIs to improve the quality of their lives\, raise the standard of living of their families and communities\, and more fully participate in our economy. Prior to joining the Initiative\, Ms. Smith spent over 5 years at Asbury University as the first director of the Global Engagement Office. In this role\, Ms. Smith created new international education initiatives and curriculum to increase cross-cultural understanding and prepare students for an increasingly global economy. Ms. Smith previously worked at The Heritage Foundation in the Office of Distinguished Fellow\, Elaine L. Chao. She previously served at the U.S. Department of Labor in the Office of the Secretary and the Office of Public Liaison. She also served in the U.S. House of Representatives and staffed Congressman Rodney P. Frelinghuysen (NJ-11). Ms. Smith immigrated to the United States with her parents at a very young age\, and she acquired her U.S. citizenship in high school. Despite her family’s humble beginnings and the challenges of being newcomers\, she witnessed first-hand how she and her family have been blessed by the many opportunities here in America. As a result\, Ms. Smith has committed herself to public service and giving back to help others access opportunities to improve their lives and their future. Ms. Smith is a 2015 Fulbright grant recipient\, where she spent time supporting international education and bridging partnerships between universities. Ms. Smith is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (B.A.) and the University of Michigan (Master of Public Policy and M.A. in Higher Education). More recently\, APIAVote has launched extensive initiatives to have a full and complete count of the Asian and Pacific Islander community in the 2020 Census. Through all these efforts\, APIAVote has played a key role in elevating the Asian American and Pacific Islander electorate to an unprecedented national level in recent years. In addition Chen serves as President of Strategic Alliances USA\, a consulting firm specializing in coalition building\, institutional development\, and partnerships among the corporate sector\, government agencies\, and the nonprofit and public sector. Chen is well-known by activists across the county. SUMMARY:2019 Giving Tuesday Pie Smash Happy Hour
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Date | Tuesday\, December 3\, 2019\nTime | 6:00 – 9:00 PM\nLocation: Ellipse Rooftop Bar \n1522 K St NW\, Washington\, DC 20005 \n\n#GivingTuesday #CAPALNEXT30\n\nDecember 3\, 2019 marks CAPAL’s 6th annual Giving Tuesday Happy Hour. The purpose of this event is to raise and increase support for CAPAL in the areas of awareness\, capital\, and partnerships. The Pie Smash is CAPAL’s major promotional event during the Giving Tuesday campaign. This is a lighthearted event designed to incentivize donors to give by attaching a dollar amount ($100) to each pie. If a Board Member is able to reach that amount\, they can designate someone (e.g.\, the donor who helped them reach that amount) to smash a pie in their face. Leading up to the event and during\, the Board Members will raise money from their networks\, and can use the event as an incentive or a follow-up.  You can donate to our individual Board members through our Giving Tuesday official donation website and donate to our organization as a whole through our Facebook fundraising page. \nThis year\, our Giving Tuesday theme #CAPALNEXT30 highlights the decades of CAPAL’s dedication to its mission. It allows us to look at how CAPAL will envision itself for the next 30 years while acclaiming the services it has provided\, through the growth of the #AANHPI community in the public service sector.  CAPAL will dedicate to its mission more as we look forward for the next 30 years to all the opportunities as we have given the AANHPI. \nPlease note that the four Board members (Cathy Yu\, Liz Zung\, Keith Preciados\, and Will Lam) will not be pie smashed\, though they will take any donations.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nSome photos from last year’s event!\n[/vc_column_text][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”15518\,15519\,15520″ img_size=”medium”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nCan’t make the event? In 2005\, Kim transitioned to director of grants management\, where he oversaw the Foundation’s distribution of funds to more than 600 grantees annually while also overhauling of the organization’s grant-making process. In 2010\, he left the Foundation to serve as director of strategic initiatives for the federal Corporation for National and Community Service in Washington\, D.C. \n“Having exposure to both the administrative and programmatic sides of the Foundation helps me to assist the president in moving the Foundation’s agenda forward\, because the internal infrastructure has to be strong for the programmatic side to work well\,” Kim says. \nKim earned his law degree from the University of Baltimore while working at Casey. He holds master’s degree in international affairs from Georgetown University and a bachelor’s degree in public policy from the University of Chicago. \nGrowing up in a Korean-immigrant family that worked in retail in the South Side of Chicago\, Kim noticed at an early age that “there were vast disparities in the opportunities people had depending on where they grew up in the city.” Working at Casey has taught him that “if you are actively engaged in finding the right solutions\, have the right resources and point of view about what it takes to bring about change\, you can actually improve lives.” \n  \nModerators\nCIA Executive  \nRegister\n**If you are unable to attend\, please notify us 24hr in advance to open your spot for another person** \n \nWe encourage you to join our mailing list\, like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for the latest updates. \n\nMore About The Washington Leadership Program\nThe Washington Leadership Program (WLP) provides a space for young AANHPI students interning in Washington\, D.C. to come together\, build community\, and explore their heritage within the context of public service.
