What responsibilities are you most excited about and why?

I am an intern at US Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) in the Legislative and Public Affairs unit. One of my main responsibilities is to help to answer correspondences directed to APHIS from the public and other various stakeholders. This process involves analyzing the correspondence, conducting research to gather information and then drafting the response. My goal is to synthesize the information and present it in a clear and concise way. I also assist with outreach for a public affairs campaign that seeks to educate the public about the harms of invasive species. I am most excited to witness the workings involved in creating a public affairs campaign.

When did you realize you wanted to explore public service?

There was no singular moment, but rather a culmination of moments. Much of my politicization can be contributed to community organizations and spaces that allowed me to learn, question, and grow. Two such organizations are CAAAV: Organizing Asian Communities and Chinatown Youth Initiatives, both of which believe in the power of youths to empower change, and that has made all the difference. It feels natural to give back, as these communities have given so much to me.

What are your plans/ goals after this internship?
