Evan Yoshimoto is an undergraduate student at the University of California- Berkeley, double majoring in Environmental Economics & Policy and Conservation & Resource Studies.\u00a0This summer, Evan is interning with the U.S. Forest Service and is working on a variety of projects between State & Private Forestry and Fire & Aviation Management<\/p>\n
What major projects are you working on in your internship? What responsibilities are you most excited about and why? <\/b><\/p>\n
The major projects I am working on include facilitating an office-wide speaker series, presenting office-wide about the importance of diversity and inclusivity in the workplace, creating an Urban Forest Tree Inventory Software Matrix, creating an outreach plan for the Smokey Bear program,, recruiting speakers for a resiliency panel, and helping out with the California State Fair. I am most excited for facilitating and speaking in front of the office, because I am very passionate about the topics we are discussing and I am always trying to improve my public speaking.<\/span><\/p>\n When did you realize you wanted to explore public service? <\/b><\/p>\n As someone who identifies as queer and Asian, living life on the margins of race and sexuality has pushed me to explore a path of public service. My grandparents\u2019 internment also pushed me to explore a path of service, because I want to work to make sure no injustice like that ever repeats itself upon any community. I want to create equitable change for the communities and intersections that I represent.<\/span><\/p>\n I plan to pursue a graduate degree in environmental management\/policy\/law in the pursuit for environmental justice. This summer, I am focusing on improving my time management, my knowledge of the U.S. Forest Service as an agency, and my public speaking skills. I also hope to find strong AANHPI community.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span>What are you looking forward to in DC \/ where your internship is located? <\/b><\/p>\n I am looking forward to meeting all the interns, especially all the remote interns who I have been working on my Community Action Project on AANHPI civic engagement with. My internship is located in Vallejo, California- I love the Bay Area.<\/span><\/p>\n For fun, I like to take trips to the local Sierra Nevada mountain range. Being outdoors alone or with my best friends is what I love most in the world.
