Alice (she\/her\/hers) is a senior at the University of Missouri working toward a dual degree in journalism-strategic communications and psychology (BA), with minors in piano performance and business. This summer, she is interning at Refugee and Immigration Services.<\/div>\n

What are your main responsibilities at your position? What are some of your big projects?<\/b><\/div>\n
As the media intern<\/span> for Refugee and Immigration Services, my main responsibilities include developing content for our social media platforms, writing media releases and engaging in community outreach. My position also involves creating educational posts aimed at educating community members about the countries, cultures and conflicts local refugees come from. One project I worked on first was finding a way to virtually celebrate World Refugee Day, which falls annually on June 20. I was able to interview our local refugees, and post their responses periodically as a blog series leading up to World Refugee Day. I also created a video to be released on World Refugee Day with the interview footage and footage from past celebrations.<\/div>\n

How does this internship<\/span>\/scholarship fit with your professional and career goals?<\/b><\/div>\n
I hope to assist the U.S. State Department as a Foreign Service Officer, and CAPAL\u2019s programming offers so many different perspectives through which I can better understand public service. Prior to this summer, my employment and volunteer experiences have mainly been tied to my university (University of Missouri), and I wanted to gain experience in the public service sector. My internship<\/span> with RIS allows me to speak with refugees who have experienced the intensive resettlement process, and learn about their experiences so I can share it with the community. This opportunity coupled with CAPAL\u2019s programming, cohort and mentorship program have already expanded my understanding of the variety of work under public service, and I\u2019m excited to continue this growth.<\/div>\n

What do you hope to achieve this summer as a part of CAPAL’s 2020 cohort?<\/b><\/div>\n
There are quite a few things I\u2019d love to achieve by summer\u2019s-end with CAPAL\u2019s cohort! Within RIS, I want to be able to create multiple videos showcasing the services RIS offers so they can use it to promote awareness and understanding. With my Community Action Project group, I want to deliver a thorough report with feedback for the partner we\u2019re working with. Mostly, I want to build strong connections with our small but dedicated 2020 cohort. It\u2019s affirming and inspiring to be a part of a cohort with peers who are just as committed to serving the community and discussing our identities and experiences. We may not be able to meet up in person now, but hopefully one day we can have a reunion (or first-time meeting?) of sorts!<\/div>\n

What does public service mean to you?<\/b><\/div>\n
Public service means contributing to a societal infrastructure that increases equity for all members of the community, whether that\u2019s through creating legislation, providing early-childhood educational programs for marginalized communities, or developing protection programs for survivors of human trafficking. Public service addresses many aspects of life from healthcare to transportation to international affairs, in a way that improves living conditions for all.<\/div>\n

Did you pick up any new hobbies during quarantine, and if so, what are they?<\/b><\/div>\n
I reached the bread-baking level of cabin fever during this quarantine, and I\u2019ve also gotten my mom in on the mischief. It\u2019s honestly so fun to knead the dough, and even more fun to eat it after it\u2019s finished baking! I also caved and downloaded TikTok on the first day of quarantine, and so I\u2019m spending way too much time on that app.<\/div>\n

What movie or show are you watching right now?<\/b><\/div>\n
I might get a ton of judgement for this, but I\u2019ve never watched \u201cAvatar: The Last Airbender\u201d in full, and so I\u2019m currently binging that on Netflix. I also love K-dramas and just finished \u201cHi Bye, Mama\u201d. I\u2019m still recovering from the emotional roller coaster.<\/div>\n

If you were stranded on an island what three items would you bring?<\/b><\/div>\n
I absolutely do not mean to objectify my sisters, but I\u2019d bring my two older sisters because they just have a wealth of knowledge, and I\u2019m convinced the three of us working together will either get us off the island, or provide enough entertainment so we can live to an old age stranded. Then the third item would be a boat. I\u2019m not sure if that\u2019s cheating. If it is, then my third item would be a book about how to get off an island.<\/div>\n
