What are your main responsibilities at your position? What are some of your big projects? (this can include projects at your internship, your specific CAP, etc)\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

At USDA FAS, I evaluate, analyze, and interpret statistical and economic data, and d<\/span>raft press releases explaining findings. I w<\/span>ork with higher graded specialists in the preparation of publications and related material, c<\/span>ompose and compile calculations or comparability determinations for the purpose of answering requests for information from the attaches stationed abroad and representatives of private trade groups and associations. In addition, I c<\/span>onduct research and prepare special economic reports and statistical analyses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For my CAP project, I inform the development of an engagement plan focused on ways to encourage young Native Hawaiians into health careers. The e<\/span>ngagement tool kit includes useable resources to be posted to social media outlets and used as PSA\u2019s. I p<\/span>resent findings on Ola Na \u2018\u014ciwi or K\u014cHI <\/span>\u02bb<\/span>ULU<\/span><\/p>\n

How does this internship fit with your professional and career goals?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

This internship fits with my professional goals in that it gives me direct experience in public policy, which I hope to pursue a career in in the future. By equipping me with economic analytical tools, this internship is extremely transferable to education, housing, and criminal justice policy, which are some of my areas of interest. <\/span><\/p>\n

What do you hope to achieve this summer as a part of CAPAL\u2019s 2021 cohort?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I hope to become more informed about issues and struggles that relate to the AANHPI community, and how I can be a better advocate for such. I also hope to build my AANHPI network and get an understanding of what it\u2019s like for people that look like me to work in the public policy sector. I am also really excited to build policy-related experience through my CAPAL internship work. <\/span><\/p>\n

What does public service mean to you?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

To me, public service means putting in the work to support underrepresented communities–not with the intentions to create some sort of massive change in a single day or project, but rather with the hopes to make the people that you do interact with feel heard in your words and in your actions. <\/span><\/p>\n

Did you pick up any new hobbies during\u00a0quarantine, and if so, what are they?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have definitely improved on my baking skills over quarantine. From the whopping three recipes that I have mastered, a fan favorite is my pineapple upside down cake. <\/span><\/p>\n
