Akiko is a rising senior at Williams College, majoring in Philosophy and Chinese, also with interests in International Relations, Economics, and Asian American Studies. She is from New York City and daughter to Japanese immigrants, the oldest of five, and is a passionate foodie and coffee addict. She enjoys playing tennis, art, listening to music, reading books, and learning languages.<\/p>\n

As a CAPAL scholar\/intern, what does CAPAL mean to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

CAPAL is a safe space for me where I can form valuable connections and a support system of fellow AANHPI while I exist as a racial minority in many of my everyday spaces such as work or college. I hope that as CAPAL interns we will mutually root one another on and understand how better to navigate our identities and leverage unique perspectives to serve our communities.<\/p>\n

What is an issue or topic within the AANHPI communities that you feel passionate about addressing?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I feel particularly passionate about appreciating intersectional identities, whether it be class, sexuality, gender, ethnicity, religion, and creating a space for queer AANHPI. I would also like to do healing work to unlearn internalized racisms and stigmas and dismantle the model minority myth.<\/p>\n

What are your main responsibilities at your position? What are some of your big projects?
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

As for now, APHIS and particularly LPA (Legislative and Public Affairs) is focused on migrating internal systems to a more condensed and unified intranet. I will be assisting with the administrative and research components related to this project as well as helping with issues relating to recent issues such as HPAI in dairy cattle, etc. I also hope to connect with folks working in the Foreign Agricultural Service and see what intersections exist between international relations and animal and plant health.<\/p>\n

How does this internship fit with your professional and career goals?<\/strong><\/p>\n

This internship allows me to gain a better understanding of domestic politics and issues pervading communities nationwide. Understanding policy and priorities in agriculture is important as it influences many other fields, and is particularly relevant to consider those in relation to climate change.<\/p>\n

What does public service mean to you? What sparked your interest or desire to get involved with public service?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Growing up low-income in NYC, I was always passionate about issues affecting BIPOC communities and was racialized very early on in my life. The rise of anti-AAPI hate during COVID-19 was a formative point that triggered my desire to defend and represent AAPI communities, whether it be through grassroots and nonprofit efforts or through more formal methods such as serving the federal government. Public service is about continuing the work of previous civil rights advocates and activists, reckoning with the imperfections of the government, while still preserving hope in reforming systems to better represent, protect, and provide opportunities for mobility and success for communities of color. Being exposed to a range of cultures from a young age and speaking several languages, I would like to leverage my experiences and multi-dimensional perspectives to offer new angles to public service and foreign affairs.<\/p>\n
