Chan kick off CAPAL\u2019s WLP Opening Ceremony"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CAPAL\u2019s signature Washington Leadership Program (WLP) 2014 kicked off its first event on June 18 at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center. Over 200 young professionals and interns gathered to hear opening remarks from CAPAL Board Members <b>June Kao<\/b> and <b>Gita Ram<\/b> (Chair) and <b>Joel Szabat<\/b>, co-founder of the <a href=\"www.ileader.org\">International Leadership Foundation (ILF)<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/capal2013\/Desktop\/WLP-Session%201%20BLOG%20POST.docx#_msocom_1\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13411\" src=\"http:\/\/capalnew.tegradesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/WLP-Opening-1-HC.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.capal.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/WLP-Opening-1-HC.png 642w, https:\/\/www.capal.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/WLP-Opening-1-HC-300x125.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Following these remarks, <b>Kiran Ahuja<\/b>, Executive Director of the <a href=\"www.whitehouse.gov\/aapi\">White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (WHIAAPI)<\/a> spoke about the importance of AAPI engagement and service.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking from her own experience as an intern in D.C. in 1993, Ahuja explained that the AAPI community has grown by leaps and bounds. However, while AAPIs have the fastest rate of growth in the U.S. among all racial groups, there still lacks an understanding of the diversity and complexities of the community, she said.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, the \u201cmodel minority myth\u201d generalizes AAPIs as achieving high levels of success, but in reality the community faces unique struggles, such as the fact that half of all AAPIs attend community college.<\/p>\n<p>To create change, she encouraged students and young professionals to bring their whole self to the job, which means getting to know the community and using their voices to propel AAPIs forward.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13412\" src=\"http:\/\/capalnew.tegradesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/IMG_0061-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.capal.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/IMG_0061-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.capal.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/IMG_0061-1024x682-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.capal.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/IMG_0061-1024x682-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>The WLP Opening Ceremony also featured <b>Gloria S. Chan<\/b>, who provided our interns and professionals with an interactive networking workshop.\u00a0 Ms. Chan\u2019s networking workshop proved extremely beneficial, even to the most seasoned DC-networkers. Her workshop covered everything from handshake etiquette to nonverbal body language to small talk snippets to following up.<\/p>\n<p>We loved that she encouraged students to create a network or \u201ctribe\u201d with individuals who share similar interests and goals because you will be able to support each other.<\/p>\n<p>Those who attended can attest to the charisma of the speakers, the wise advice for succeeding in the professional world, and the fun workshop that provided us with relevant tips for networking.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13414\" src=\"http:\/\/capalnew.tegradesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/IMG_0017-682x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"682\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.capal.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/IMG_0017-682x1024.jpg 682w, https:\/\/www.capal.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/IMG_0017-682x1024-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px\" \/>Missed our Opening Ceremony session?
