Hear from our new Operations Vice Chair Alex Tran on his interest in the AAPI community and why he chose to be a part of CAPAL.

Why did you join the CAPAL board?

I joined CAPAL in order to develop the next generation of AAPI leaders while also continuing to hone my own leadership skills. I made many lasting relationships as a CAPAL intern, and hope to guide to other young leaders into making meaningful ties as they come to DC and navigate this busy city.

What do you hope to accomplish as a board member? If you have an elected position, what do you hope to accomplish in that position?

As Vice Chair of Operations I hope to continue to build on the work of my predecessors and push CAPAL in new directions. We have established a solid reputation in our local community and I want to continue to develop future leaders by expanding our outreach to local campuses, and standardizing the processes within our committees. Our goal continues to be to develop the next generation of AAPI leaders, and as long as we do not waiver from this mission, I have the utmost faith we will continue to grow for years to come.

How does being a board member fit in with your professional goals?

As a consultant, developing leadership and management skills is a critical part of my work. CAPAL provides an opportunity for me to practice these skills while, also engaging in a large network of professional AAPI leaders. With opportunities abound, you never know if you’ll meet someone at a CAPAL happy hour who may help you land your next job.

What does public leadership mean to you?

Public leadership is different from other types of leadership in the sense that a leader working in the public sector is responsible for representing much more than their office or agency. These leaders are responsible for representing the culture, values, and issues that concern the people in their community. The relationship is therefore more intimate, thus underlying how important it is to have the proper leader in place. CAPAL wants to be the vessel through which individuals in our community can be developed into effective public service leaders.

What is the most interesting thing about you?

Well I am actually half-French and half-Cambodian/Chinese. I can speak French but do not know any Chinese or Cambodian. I have been to France over 10 times but have yet to visit Asia.

Don’t worry though, I am forever committed to the cause!

Alex Tran is an Associate Research Data Analyst for SRA International, currently working in the General Services Administration Office of Government-Wide Policy.
