Why did you join the CAPAL board?<\/b><\/p>\n

I strongly believe that CAPAL provides an invaluable platform for bolstering the professional growth and leadership potential of young AAPI professionals. As a queer, 1st-generation, Filipino-American, serving as a board member has allowed me to be a visible and credible advocate for those who feel like outsiders in their own communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

What do you hope to accomplish as a board member? If you have an elected position, what do you hope to accomplish in that position?<\/b><\/p>\n

As Vice Chair of Programs, my goal is to empower our team and the next generation of AAPI leaders through quality, innovative, and strategic programming. Furthermore, I will seek to foster an inclusive and collaborative space that will generate new ideas and additional opportunities between CAPAL and our partners and donors.<\/span><\/p>\n

How does being a board member fit in with your professional goals?<\/b><\/p>\n

For those who have heard me during karaoke, I am not a shy person! But I’ve learned so much about interfacing with professionals and community leaders, while still maintaining the core of who I am when advocating for various causes that I support. I am deeply grateful to serve as part of a team that has provided me a space to grow, be authentic, and feel connected. I strive to continue growing as an effective professional and activist in the international development, digital advocacy, and social justice sectors. CAPAL continues to provide critical resources and networks for the development and success of myself and so many other young AAPI professionals.<\/span><\/p>\n

What does public leadership mean to you?<\/b><\/p>\n

Being a public leader entails understanding the needs of your community and being a just representative at the decision table. CAPAL is crucial for making sure that young AAPI leaders can have those “seats” at that table.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"What is the most interesting thing about you?<\/b><\/p>\n

I’ve been privileged to have traveled to and live in many countries. Living, working, and traveling abroad challenged me reconcile the paradigms of pinoy and the privilege that comes with being a first-generation, Filipino-American. I\u2019ve grown to embrace the complexities of my identity and I have developed a creativity and poise for addressing questions of diversity and identity formation. I realize now that one of the most effective ways I can make an empowering impact as a proudly American cultural representative abroad, and an advocate for AAPI leadership at home, is to sincerely appreciate my roots and be an empathetic role model for those who may feel like outsiders in their own community.<\/p>\n

Christian Edlagan is a proud Filipino New Yorker, and is currently a Project Assistant at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED). At NED, he supports communications and event coordination for the World Movement for Democracy Secretariat. Prior to joining NED, he provided advocacy, outreach, and digital communications support for various non-profits and projects, including Groundswell Energy, All Out, the United Nations Free & Equal campaign, and AARP NY. He graduated from Loyola University New Orleans with a B.A. in Political Science, and has worked and studied in Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, and Estonia. He has travelled to over 30 countries, speaks French, and aims to improve his Filipino, Spanish, and Russian. In his leisure time, he enjoys yoga, pub trivia, and charity runs. \"\"Nyana recently graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with a B.S. Geographical Sciences. While there she also pursued minors in Global Poverty, and Spanish. She is committed to engaging communities and creating social change both in the U.S. and abroad.
