A rising senior at the College of William & Mary, this summer she is interning with staff at the CAPAL office.

What are your main responsibilities at your position? What are you looking forward to the most in your position?

Working in the office, I do a lot of work related to the events that CAPAL sponsors, from the Washington Leadership Program to our AAPI Leadership Roundtable Series to the AAPI Career Fair. I make sure people are registered and up to date with what CAPAL is working on, so I am also constantly putting out CAPAL’s name and supporting the initiatives of other organizations on social media to foster this public service community that is so prevalent in DC. I also manage the blog for CAPAL and am helping the Development Team with other small tasks. Logistics are time-consuming but necessary when it comes to all the events we plan, from getting tables to carting all our promotional materials to a particular venue. This position has really taught me about staying organized, both with my time and in my work in general.

I am super excited to watch how the other CAPAL interns grow this summer and engage with each other at our events, but I think what I’m most looking forward to is learning from the CAPAL leadership all that can be done in the name of public service, specifically for those in AAPI communities. It is really special to be able to put faces to the work that goes behind programs, and to see that drive and passion firsthand is inspiring to say the very least.

This work is so important in helping people self-actualize and discover what is truly important to them, and I can really see how CAPAL gives people the tools necessary to do that.

Did you find anything surprising about your internship or doing public service work?

What I found most surprising is how exhausting it is to conduct outreach and to stay relevant. On Facebook or Twitter for example, an issue/event can be a really hot topic and motivate people to take action for themselves and their communities, but that fervor or relevance dies so much more quickly than I had ever anticipated. I always had an idea of the importance of social media in campaigns but never liked the idea of “feeding the beast” and creating a dependency on social media to stay current. But now I embrace it fully because it is so necessary, and I have to get creative to figure out how to catch and keep people’s interest on platforms that are often more geared towards entertainment than recognition of public service.

When you get off work, what do you do? What are your weekend activities?

Wait, there’s an end to work?

Just kidding.

After work I like to take my trusty bike on adventures. On weekdays it’s typically shorter distances to monuments or areas of the city I have yet to explore. I love it because I get to know the ins and outs of whatever city I’m in at that moment, so when friends or family visit I can take them to places that have real meaning to me.

On weekends I have a lot more time, so when I bike I can go longer distances. I actually biked 2 hours to my best friend’s place in Alexandria this past weekend…but I swear I’m not a bike snob! Other weekend activities include hanging out with my friends and other interns, trying to find free food opportunities, and following live music events.

What is something that most people would not know about you?

I was run over by a dogsled my sophomore year of high school. It was worth it though because the dogs were amazing. I also now have a severe dislike for cross-country skiing.

Meet all of our CAPAL Scholars & Interns here.

Posted by Felicia Wong

Felicia Wong is currently a senior at the College of William and Mary, double majoring in Neuroscience and Asian American Studies, and minoring in Biochemistry. She is president of the Filipino American Student Association, and current non-academic projects include creating films calling for diversity curriculums/requirements and establishing an official APIA Studies program. Felicia was also elected president of Global Medical Brigades to lead a sustainable healthcare program in rural communities in Nicaragua. She hopes to connect her interests in healthcare with the community she has found in her cultural background. Having lived in Germany for most of her childhood, Felicia makes yearly trips back to visit her family, providing opportunities for her to indulge in her greatest joys: touring castles, eating at cafés, taking fashion cues from strangers, cooking with her family. Non-country specific pleasures include: biking, watching live music performances, screaming because Game of Thrones.

Our first CAPAL Intern Spotlight this week is Felicia Wong, hailing from Virginia Beach, VA and Stuttgart, Germany.
