The Summer Closing Ceremony is an annual tradition that celebrates the accomplishments of CAPAL\u2019s scholar and intern class for the year, signaling the end of CAPAL\u2019s summer activities. The Closing Ceremony features a keynote speaker and allows CAPAL\u2019s scholars and interns to briefly present their Community Action Projects, collaborative projects they have completed over the summer that produce a product that serves a community need. Guests for the Closing Ceremony include young professionals and other members from the DC Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community, as well as CAPAL\u2019s government and private funders. This is an invite-only, cocktail attire event with approximately 200 guests. Dinner will be served.<\/p>\n

\"Ahuja_Jasmeet_H22987\"<\/p>\n

Jasmeet Kaur Ahuja<\/strong> is a lawyer at Hogan Lovells US LLP, where she focuses on privacy and cybersecurity matters. Prior to joining Hogan Lovells, Jasmeet served numerous arms of the U.S. government in developing defense and foreign relations policy. Early in her career, Jasmeet managed a national cybersecurity task force sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. As a Presidential Management Fellow with the U.S. Department of Defense, Office of the Secretary of Defense, she assisted in developing and managing the department’s priorities and assessing its capabilities in science and technology. Later, she served as the Director of South Asia for the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, where she implemented the department’s security commitments across the region and managed the distribution of over US$300 million in defense contracts. Most recently, Jasmeet served as the Professional Staff Member responsible for South Asia for the U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs. In this role, she drafted legislation that continues to define our relationship with Pakistan and facilitated passage of legislation granting congressional consent to civilian nuclear cooperation with India.<\/p>\n

Jasmeet clerked for the Honorable Kent A. Jordan of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and for the Honorable Mary A. McLaughlin of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Jasmeet graduated from Yale Law School, where she was a Paul & Daisy Soros Fellow for New Americans, and earned a B.S. and an M.S. in engineering from Stanford University, where she graduated with Honors and Phi Beta Kappa.<\/p>\n

She serves on the Advisory Boards of The Sikh Coalition, the Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership, Project2049, and the Anti-Defamation League of Philadelphia.<\/p>\n

Keynote\u00a0Speaker<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"Judge<\/p>\n

Theodore D. Chuang<\/strong> serves as a United States District Judge for the District of Maryland and sits at the United States Courthouse in Greenbelt, Maryland. Judge Chuang was nominated by President Obama on September 25, 2013 and received his commission on May 2, 2014.<\/p>\n

Prior to his appointment, Judge Chuang served in the Obama Administration as Deputy General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from 2011 to 2014 and as Associate General Counsel of DHS from 2009 to 2011. In 2009, he served as Chief Investigative Counsel for the U.S. House of Representatives, Committee on Energy and Commerce. From 2007 to 2009, he served as Deputy Chief Investigative Counsel for the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. From 2004 to 2007, Judge Chuang was in private practice in Washington, D.C. at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP.<\/p>\n

From 1998 to 2004, Judge Chuang served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the District of Massachusetts. From 1995 to 1998, he served as a trial attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, in Washington, D.C. Judge Chuang began his legal career as a law clerk to Judge Dorothy W. Nelson of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.<\/p>\n

Throughout his career, Judge Chuang has been active in professional and community organizations. He has served as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Asian Pacific American Legal Resource Center, a legal services organization serving low income, limited English proficient Asian Americans and immigrants in Maryland and the Washington, D.C. region. He has also served on the Board of Governors of the District of Columbia Bar, as President of the Asian American Lawyers Association of Massachusetts, President-Elect of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of the Greater Washington, D.C. Area, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership. Judge Chuang is the first Asian American federal judge appointed to serve in Maryland or in any of the states within the Fourth Circuit.<\/p>\n

Judge Chuang graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1994, where he was an Editor of the Harvard Law Review and a Finalist in the Ames Moot Court Competition, and received his B.A. summa cum laude in Economics from Harvard College in 1991. He was born in Media, Pennsylvania and grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts.<\/p>\n
