2018 AANHPI Roundtable Series: Erwin Tan

Speaker

Erwin J. Tan, MD is the Director of Thought Leadership – Health at AARP and a board certified internist and geriatrician.   Erwin previously served as the director of Senior Corps at the Corporation for National and Community Service. From 2004 to 2010, he served as an assistant professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine where he was an attending physician in the Division of Geriatric Medicine. He was also a co-investigator in the Baltimore Experience Corps Study. From 2003-2004, Erwin was a White House Fellow serving as a Special Assistant to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Before coming to the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area, Erwin was a faculty member at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, where he served as Geriatric Medicine Fellow and a Primary Care Medicine Resident.    Erwin was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army Reserves. He received a bachelor’s from Brown University and graduated from New York University School of Medicine as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society.  Erwin was born in Indonesia and is a naturalized citizen of the United States.

Moderator

Christian Edlagan is a community builder, strategic thinker, and social leader. He is currently the Events and Conferences Manager at the Washington Center for Equitable Growth, a DC-based non-profit focused on inclusive economic research and policy. Prior to this role, he organized international conferences at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED). He has provided outreach and digital communications support for various non-profits and projects, including Groundswell’s Clean Energy Program, the United Nations Free & Equal campaign, and AARP NY. A proud Filipino New Yorker, Christian serves on the Board of Trustees of the National Association of Asian American Professionals, DC Chapter (NAAAP-DC) and was previously the Acting Chair of the Board of Directors of the Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership (CAPAL). He graduated from Loyola University New Orleans with a B.A. in Political Science, and has worked and studied in Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, and Estonia. In his spare time, Christian hosts bar trivia and helps his friends sell food at local farmers markets.

More About CAPAL’s AANHPI Roundtable Series

The AANHPI Roundtable Series provides an opportunity for students and young professionals in Washington, DC to learn from public service leaders in our community in an intimate and conversational setting. Each roundtable features one public service leader and accommodates at most 25 attendees. Every roundtable session is free and open to the public, however, due to a limited seating we encourage attendees to register in order to ensure a seat. Lunch will be provided.

The Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership (CAPAL) seeks to empower Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) youth by increasing access to public service opportunities and building a strong AANHPI public service pipeline.
