2018 Washington Leadership Program Session IV: Ideas to Action – Grassroots Advocacy

The fourth WLP Session: Ideas to Action: Grassroots Advocacy will focus on the history and involvement of AANHPIs in grassroots advocacy, organizing, and civic engagement. The session will discuss the role of the AANHPI community in past civil rights movement and grassroots efforts, and how the community can mobilize today with shifting political landscapes, mass communication, and prolific sociocultural movements? Registration for the event will begin at 5:30pm with our program following promptly at 6:00pm. All WLP sessions are free to the public, but seating is limited. Please register online to reserve your seat. Dinner will be provided.
Speakers
Anj Chaudhry joins National CAPACD from CAAAV: Organizing Asian communities in New York City, where as Lead Organizer, they organized Asian immigrant communities in public housing and fought for a resident- led rezoning of Chinatown. Prior to CAAAV, Anj served as the Lead Organizer at Chhaya CDC, where they worked with South Asian tenants and homeowners facing foreclosure. In addition to organizing around housing and economic justice, Anj has advocated for LGBTQ rights, including winning two same sex marriage campaigns in Minnesota, and serving on the Board of Directors for the National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance. Anj began their career at South Asian Americans Leading Together, where they conducted outreach to South Asians in Maryland after the 2008 recession. When not organizing, Anj can be found cooking, practicing meditation, and studying ayurvedic medicine.
Grace Choi is the Associate Director for Global Gender Policy and Advocacy at Save the Children. Previously, she served as Policy Advisor in the Secretary’s Office on Global Women’s Issues at the U.S. Department of State. Before that role, she served as Staff Assistant in the White House Liaison’s Office at the U.S. Department of State.
She is a NetKAL Fellow, was a Member of the White House National Security Leadership Workshop, and served on the Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership’s (CAPAL) Board of Directors as Vice Chair for Programs.
Prior to her political appointment at the Department of State, Grace worked for the Council of Korean Americans (CKA), the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) in Congresswoman Judy Chu’s office, the Presidential Inauguration Committee (PIC), President Obama’s 2012 Presidential Campaign, the U.S. Committee for Human Rights in North Korea, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Refugee Affairs Division.
She holds a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School at Tufts University and a Bachelor of Arts from Boston College.
Hoan Dang is a well-known community organizer, activist, and public servant in Montgomery County. He is a recent candidate for the Montgomery County Council (At-Large) in the state of Maryland. For over three decades, Hoan has served on more than 15 non-profit boards, commissions and community organizations including as board member and President of the Association of Vietnamese Americans, which has resettled and provided direct services to over 25,000 refugees and immigrants. Hoan was elected to the Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee, serving in this role from 2010 to 2014. Additionally, he served as Chair of the Maryland Democratic Party’s Asian American & Pacific Islander Leadership Council from 2014 to 2017. Hoan is also a founding board member of the Asian American Political Alliance, focusing on efforts to help increase voter engagement and civic participation. Hoan currently works as a budget expert for a federal client, managing three multi-million dollar budgets and specializing in procurement services. His prior professional experience includes working as a Corporate Internal Auditor and Regulatory Compliance Analyst for Lockheed Martin, and as an Electronics Engineer for NOAA/National Weather Service. Hoan holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Vanderbilt University, and graduated from the University of Maryland College Park with dual Masters degrees in Business Administration and Operations Research.
Presenter Joshua Habursky is the Founder/Chairman of the Grassroots Professional Network and concurrently the Director of Advocacy for the Independent Community Bankers of America. He is one of the most cited authors and speakers on advocacy, grassroots, and government relations communication topics. Joshua has led grassroots advocacy campaigns for three national associations in transportation, healthcare and many other public affairs campaigns providing strategic communication services to trade associations, corporations and non-profit organizations. Joshua has been awarded recognition for being a young association innovator and for grassroots efforts in both the association and political campaign arenas. Joshua is a regular contributor to Roll Call, Bloomberg, The Huffington Post, PR News, Campaigns & Elections, and The Hill on advocacy, grassroots, and political topics. Josh is also an adjunct professor in the Reed College of Media at West Virginia University teaching strategic communication and event promotion courses and taught Campaigns & Specials Interests at Heidelberg University during the 2016 Presidential Election Cycle. Joshua received his bachelor’s in political science from Washington & Jefferson College and a master’s in American government from Georgetown University and is currently pursuing a Certificate in Non-Profit Leadership from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Session Moderator Liz Jung is a Financial and Management Analyst at the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). She’s held multiple roles at CNCS including the VISTA Recruitment Specialist and New Jersey State Office Program officer. Prior to joining CNCS she was the Communications Specialist with the University of Chicago’s Science of Philanthropy Initiative. She is proud alumna of AmeriCorps VISTA and the Coro Fellows Program in Public Affairs. Liz is also part of the CNCS Young Professionals Affinity Group leadership team, National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum DC Chapter’s board and the 2017 Federal Asian Pacific American Council’s Career Development Program. She has a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from the University of Chicago and Bachelors of Arts from Colorado College. In her free time, Liz likes to dance, read and drink reds and stouts.
Panel Moderator Tonia Bui is a Senior Consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton, specializing in Federal policy analysis. She currently provides grants management expertise for the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet), an independent agency under the U.S. Department of Commerce. Additionally, Tonia is a member of the Montgomery County Community Development Advisory Committee, which provides community development block grant funding recommendations to the County Executive. Most recently, she was the treasurer for the Hoan Dang for County Council (At-Large) campaign. Tonia’s portfolio also includes media relations and constituent outreach. Previously, she served as the Communications Specialist at the national non-profit Equal Justice Works and Communications Director for the Nguyen for Delegate Campaign (VA-67). Her efforts to build stakeholder engagement stems from serving as an Outreach Coordinator at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and as the Member Outreach Assistant to former Vice Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, Rep. Xavier Becerra (CA-34). Additionally, she served as a legislative intern for the former offices of U.S. Senator Barack Obama (IL-13) and California Assembly Member Fiona Ma (CA-12). Tonia holds a Master in Public Policy from American University and a B.A. in Mass Communications and Gender & Women’s Studies from the University of California, Berkeley.

More About The Washington Leadership Program
The Washington Leadership Program (WLP) provides a space for young AANHPI students interning in Washington, D.C. to come together, build community, and explore their heritage within the context of public service. Through five sessions over the summer, WLP introduces students to AANHPI public service leaders who can inform and inspire students’ own civic engagement.
The Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership (CAPAL) seeks to empower Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) youth by increasing access to public service opportunities and building a strong AANHPI public service pipeline. We envisions a future with equitable AANHPI representation throughout all levels of government and public service.
